WHO WE ARE
South Jersey STEAM Inc. (SJS), is a youth focused non-profit corporation based in South Jersey whose mission is to provide neurodiverse youth with access to programs and experiences that connect science and technology with the arts. South Jersey STEAM was founded to resist the culture of labeling disabilities in youth and to shift the paradigm and speak, instead, of diversities – specifically neurodiversity. Being able to embrace diversity in all its forms is a key aspect of life in the 21st century.
ACTIVITIES
The role of South Jersey STEAM is to promote student achievement and inclusion in STEAM subjects by means of injecting art in order to spark a sense of play and imagination. This will be accomplished through a series of after school and community based programs and experiences throughout New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. Students will have the opportunity to discover art, science, and technology through hands-on experiences such as: creating instruments using recycled materials to explore the science of sound, attend a career exploration speaker series, participate in exciting and interactive local excursions, or join a FIRST robotics competition team just to name a few!
FIRST ROBOTICS COMPETITIONÂ TEAMS
FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is an international competition for elementary and middle school students ages 9-14. Students design and build a robot using LEGO Mindstorms technology to complete a series of missions. Teams will also research a real-world problem and create an innovative solution. FIRST FLL Jr. also offers students ages 6-10 the opportunity to explore a real-world scientific concept, then build a motorized model and develop a Show Me Poster to illustrate their journey of discovery.
IMMERSIVE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES
At South Jersey STEAM, we are passionate about making the world our classroom. We learn through hands on play, exploration, and adventure unbounded by walls and the internet. Students are not only allowed, but are encouraged to use their curiosity and imaginations to discover the world around them.
TEAM BUILDING
Teamwork is important not only in childhood, but it also plays an important role in helping students succeed as adults. One of the most important lessons that children can learn is how to actively listen and communicate with others as part of a team. South Jersey STEAM incorporates team building exercises and challenges into all of our activities.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND SERVICE
At South Jersey STEAM, we believe that children need to experience a foundation for responsible citizenship. Youth have the capacity to inspire and mobilize others in order to improve the communities in which they live. South Jersey STEAM partners with local agencies and organizations to offer students opportunities for meaningful teamwork, collaboration, and social responsibility.
